The Oar: Reviews & Ratings
So good. Great sushi and clam chowder. Awesome views.
Our visit to The Oar in Block Island was fantastic from start to finish. There was ample parking, and we were seated right away. A friendly waiter greeted us and made us feel welcome. The ambience was delightful, with decor featuring oars. Our appetizers and drinks arrived promptly, and the blackened salmon was absolutely amazing. It’s a must-try for anyone visiting Block Island.
The food and the atmosphere are fantastic. The sushi is definitely worth it I believe we ordered the tuna loco and everyone loved it. The calamari was my least favorite. The only thing that is slightly confusing is the service, they have 2 check ins and the process with slightly confusing when you have a large crowd, but overall the staff is very nice it’s just the restaurants process that is confusing.
The Oar on Block Island is a true gem, and it’s no wonder it was at the top of our list during our stay at The 1661 Inn. Mudslides and Tuna Nachos might not seem like your typical summer afternoon fare, but at this world-famous spot, it all comes together perfectly! We even indulged in the Jameson cold brew floater, which was a fun and delicious touch. Located in New Harbor, The Oar has a rich history that adds to its charm. Originally a casual spot for boaters in the 1960s, The Oar has evolved into a must-visit destination on Block Island. The area itself is steeped in maritime history, with New Harbor being one of the island's busiest ports. The restaurant’s name comes from the tradition of patrons leaving behind signed oars, which now decorate the space, creating a unique and personal atmosphere. The Oar's setting on the water's edge offers stunning views of the harbor, enhancing the relaxed vibe that draws both locals and visitors alike. Whether you’re there for a casual drink or a full meal, The Oar provides an unforgettable Block Island experience, blending its rich history with the laid-back island lifestyle.
Stopped in for their famous mudslide and it did not disappoint—perfectly creamy, just the right kick, and exactly what a summer day calls for. Sipping it while taking in the view of the boat basin made the whole experience even better. Great spot to relax, take in the scene, and treat yourself. Highly recommend!
The view over the water from the Adirondack chairs is excellent. The food is tasty & the drinks at aesthetically pleasing.
The oar is not just a restaurant, it is an experience of island life for humans and animals (especially seagulls)! The food is amazing, the view is picturesque, and it is altogether incredible!
Second time coming here and probably my favorite dinner and drinks on the island. The sushi is outstanding, the mudslides are the closest thing to perfect that I’ve ever had, the service is great, and the place is so big you don’t have to worry as much about not getting a table on a busy weekend
